Chomutov - Šichtův důl

Information

Visited:31. 3. 2021

History:This mine is one of many that defy the idea of lignite mining in the Chomutov region. Originally, the Georg Zeche underground mine was founded here in the 18th century to extract lignite. This mine was located in the Old Village open-air museum between a log house, a farmhouse and a mill. It was entered from Šichtův důl Street, where the original mining buildings are still preserved. This mine reached a depth of 19 m at the site of the pit. This underground mine operated here until the beginning of the 20th century, when it was replaced by the Šicht surface mine sometime between 1902 and 1905. This mine was then mined until the middle of the 20th century and the site I refer to on the map was used as a tipple. Eventually, this mine was reclaimed for the newly established Stará Ves open-air museum sometime during the second half of the 20th century or early 21st century. Thus, the mine is only commemorated by an overgrown spoil heap, a few preserved buildings and three mine carts serving as a monument to mining.

Impressions:A mine that, if it weren't for the mining trucks and a few buildings, would be almost unnoticeable.
