Chomutov - lookout tower on Strážiště

Visited:21. 6. 2021

History:The Strážiste hill was a popular tourist destination as early as the end of the 19th century. Thanks to this, a wooden shelter was first built here, which was replaced by a gloriette with refreshments and an 8 m high wooden lookout tower on 2 July 1882. On 12 March 1924, the gloriette burnt down and the Chomutov councillors decided to build a hotel with a stone lookout tower. This complex was then designed by the architect Kugler. Preparations for the construction began as early as 1927 and the tower and hotel were completed on 12 December 1931. After the end of World War II, the hotel was renamed the Partisan Hotel. In the 1990s, the hotel and tower changed hands frequently and gradually fell into disrepair. This continued until 2001, when it was purchased by the entrepreneur Mr. František Donát, who had the hotel and the lookout tower reconstructed. However, the lookout tower was no longer accessible, as there were rooms for guests. Unfortunately, on 23 November 2004 the hotel was destroyed by fire and subsequently the hotel was rebuilt between 2005 and 2010 according to the plans of Ing. Sedláček. Subsequently, because the hotel was difficult to maintain, it changed hands frequently during the 2nd decade of the 21st century. However, the tower itself has been preserved in its original form, which is a 20 m high stone tower with a viewing platform at a height of 17 m.
