History:When the Jesuit order came to this town, they decided to build the university Domus Pauperum. Sometime after 1591, this school building was built on this site along the city walls. At this time, it was a ground-floor brick Baroque building, which at that time was still without a tower. In 1598, like most of the town, this building suffered a severe fire and was reconstructed and extended by one storey. By this time, the building had already swallowed up part of the walls along with the watchtower, which is now called the observatory tower. According to surviving records from 1626, we learn that this building housed a study room, a dining room, a dormitory and 146 students under the supervision of a regent and a spiritualist. After the abolition of the Jesuit Order in 1773, this school was to be abolished as well. This did not happen, however, and in 1779 the Dominicans took over the school from St. Giles and in 1786 the building began to serve as the town's grammar school. Between 1845 and 1847 the school underwent modifications, during which the baroque tower was removed to create an observation deck. The grammar school was housed here until 1932, when the army administration began to be housed here. During the second half of the 20th century, the building first housed a library, then a house of political education, and finally, since 1989, it has served as a museum.
