Kadaň - Bird houses

Information

Visited:Unvisited

History:These so-called Bird Houses were built at some unknown time as small half-timbered buildings with one room. At the time of their construction, these buildings, which are connected to the city fortifications, served as buildings where the poor inhabitants of the city lived. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the bird houses, together with the adjacent Gothic defensive bastion, served as a base and storehouse of gunpowder and bullets for the Kadan sharpshooters. In 1788, they set up their own tavern here and in 1844 the foundation stone of a restaurant called the Shooting Range was laid. Today, the Shooting Range Cultural House stands on this site. Although the town walls were demolished during the 19th and 20th centuries, fortunately the wall has been preserved and so these bird houses have survived to the present day.
