History:The House of the Golden Ring (No. 96) is a medieval house in Žatecká Street (formerly Kovářská Street) in the Old Town of Kadan. The House of the Golden Ring is a medieval house with extensive Gothic cellars from the 14th century. It stands in the formerly very busy main street leading from the Old Town to the Špitálské suburb. At the end of the 18th century, it was significantly rebuilt and acquired a classical façade, with more significant structural alterations not occurring until 1909. From 1833, the house was a furrier's shop founded by Johann W. Göhler, from whom it was also possible to buy liqueurs made by the famous Karlovy Vary company Jan Becher. In 1896, Julius Schreiner is mentioned as the operator of the shop, who sold not only furs and leather goods but also musical instruments. However, the house continued to be owned by the Göhler family, with Wilhelm Göhler still appearing as the owner in 1916. In 1927, however, the house at the Golden Ring was already owned by Paul Janka, who ran a barber and hairdresser's shop in the house. The family of Paul Zentner, a Jewish horse trader who died in the German concentration camp at Auschwitz in 1944, lived here briefly as a subtenant. His sons Robert and Erich were also murdered by the German National Socialists. After World War II, Jan Dvořák took over the house and the barber shop in 1945 as the Czech National Administrator. A wrought iron house sign with a gilded ring and the inscription "At the Golden Ring" hangs on the house. The ring has been a symbol of authority, loyalty and unity since the Middle Ages. Originally, another sign, a polygonal ceramic vessel with the figures of seven little men embracing each other as a symbol of unity and cohesion, was found on the roof of the house shield. Each of the little men was engaged in an activity that referred to different phases of leather work or fur farming, for example, one hunting and another herding, etc. This house in Žatecká Street was therefore called "At the Seven Little Men" because of this original sign. In the 1980s, however, this old house sign was removed due to its dilapidation. In 2005, the owners of the house, Mr and Mrs Stiess, installed a new house sign with a ring which, like the original sign, symbolises loyalty and unity.
